Acolytes / Altar Boys

Altar Hours

Sundays and Holy Days

All young men, ages 8 to 18, are invited to serve in the altar as acolytes. This wonderful spiritual experience allows you to serve the Lord as assistants to Father Makarios during Divine Liturgy services. The word acolyte comes from the Greek word “akoulotheo” meaning “to follow”. The role of the Altar Boy is a stewardship of young men; a service that they offer to God as their regular Sunday offering of talent and ability. In serving our Lord, Altar Boys are able to participate in the true form of teamwork and servitude. Please encourage your son, grandson, and/or nephew to help serve Christ through this wonderful opportunity.

Altar Boys assist the clergy during services and may perform any of the following:

  • carry the cross, candles or liturgical fans in processions and entrances
  • maintain the censer, ensuring it has enough live charcoal, loading it with incense and handing it to the priest or deacon when required
  • preparing the hot water (zeon) in time for it to be added to the chalice at the Divine Liturgy
  • prepare the antidoron for the people to receive after Holy Communion
  • any other necessary tasks so that the celebrant need not be distracted during the service

For more information or to get involved, contact Father Makarios at frmaknia@gmail.com
